Moth holes, pilling & zip repairs: when to fix, when to restyle

Not every flaw in a vintage piece needs to be hidden - but some do need addressing. Here's how to decide what's worth repairing, what can be restyled, and when to bring it to us.

Moth holes

Small holes (under 5mm): These can often be invisibly mended - and a good repair is genuinely undetectable. At Reloved Studio, we offer invisible mending for small moth holes, carefully matched to the original fabric. Get in touch to discuss your piece.

Larger holes or clusters: We also offer visible mending as a considered design choice. Sashiko-style stitching, embroidery, or contrast darning can turn damage into something intentional and beautiful - particularly effective on chunky knits and casual pieces.

When to let go: If the fabric around the hole is also weakened and fragile, repair may not hold. In this case, we can advise on repurposing options - or point you towards textile recycling schemes.

Pilling

Pilling is almost always fixable. Our pilling removal service restores the surface of your garment, working carefully section by section to bring it back to life. For very fine or delicate fabrics, we use a gentler technique to avoid any risk of damage.

Prevention is easier than cure: wash knits inside out, use a mesh laundry bag, and avoid washing with rougher fabrics that cause friction. If your knitwear is looking tired, get in touch and we'll take a look.

Broken or stuck zips

Stuck zip: Often a quick fix - graphite, beeswax, or lip balm along the teeth can free a stuck slider. Worth trying at home before anything else.

Zip pull broken off: A small safety pin works as a temporary fix, or we can replace the pull with something more considered - a key ring, ribbon loop, or decorative charm.

Zip needs full replacement: We offer zip replacement as part of our repair service. Invisible zips, metal zips, concealed zips - we'll match the right technique to your garment. Get in touch with details of your piece and we'll give you a quote.

The restyle option

Sometimes a flaw is an opportunity. A damaged neckline becomes a reason to add a contrast collar. A worn hem becomes a cropped silhouette. Moth damage on a sleeve becomes a reason to make it sleeveless. We love working with customers to find creative solutions - so if you're not sure what to do with a piece, just ask.

The most sustainable garment is the one you actually wear. It's always worth trying to save something before giving up on it, and we're here to help. Get in touch to talk through your repair.
