Handmade corduroy coats are surprisingly hard to find. Vintage ones turn up - we've sold a few over the years, always within seconds - but a new coat, cut like the 70s ones, made properly, in a weight of corduroy that will still be structural in twenty years? We looked. We couldn't find one we'd sell. So we're making it, and this post is the honest version of how that's going.
Why a corduroy coat
After six years of selling vintage, you notice patterns in what people ask for and what never sticks around. Corduroy outerwear is one of ours: every vintage corduroy jacket or coat we've listed has sold fast, and the requests keep coming after they're gone. The problem with vintage coats is the eternal one - each is a one-off, in one size, and if it's not your size, that's the end of it.
A handmade coat fixes that. Same 70s-rooted design language we sell in vintage form, but made new, in a small run, sustainably.
What we're making
Without giving the whole design away before launch:
- A vintage-inspired corduroy coat, drawing on the 70s silhouettes we know best from six years of handling the originals
- Heavyweight cotton corduroy - we've spent months on fabric weight alone, because the difference between a coat that hangs properly and one that collapses is measured in grams per square metre, and most modern corduroy is on the wrong side of that line
- Made in a small first run, like our handmade knitwear - no warehouse of stock, no over-production
The design process has involved more sourcing back-and-forth than we'd like to admit. Getting fabric weight, colour and quality right for a small run is genuinely the hard part of small-batch clothing - nobody tells you that the fabric takes longer than the design.
What "built to last decades" means to us
We spend one to five hours a week repairing vintage clothing before it's listed, which is an education in how clothes fail. Seams give before fabric. Linings die before shells. Buttons disappear from coats that are otherwise perfect. The coat is being designed backwards from those failure points: the construction decisions are being made by people who have unpicked fifty years of other people's construction decisions.
The goal is simple to say and slow to do: a coat that could plausibly end up in a vintage shop in 2066, still worth buying.
When and how to get one
The coat launches this autumn in a limited first run. The waitlist gets first access before anything goes public - and given how the waitlist grew when we first mentioned the coat on Instagram, first access will matter.

The coat is designed to be one-size, gathered at the neckline like the vintage originals it's based on - so it works across a huge range of bodies rather than being cut to a fixed size. Full flat measurements will be published at launch.
Will there be more runs?
The first run is deliberately small. Future runs depend on how the first one goes - joining the waitlist is the reliable way to know.
