Shopping for vintage online is a skill - and once you've got it, you'll never look back. The key is knowing what to look for, what questions to ask, and how to avoid the common pitfalls. Here's everything you need to know.
Know your measurements
Vintage sizing is completely different from modern sizing. A vintage size 14 is often equivalent to a modern size 10. Always go by measurements, never by the label size. Know your bust, waist, hip, and shoulder measurements before you start browsing, and always check the item measurements listed in the product description.

Read the description carefully
A good vintage seller will describe the fabric, condition, any flaws, and the measurements in detail. If any of this information is missing, ask before you buy. Pay attention to words like "as seen", or "vintage condition" - these often mean there are flaws that aren't immediately obvious in photos.
Look at all the photos
Check every image carefully. Look for signs of wear at the underarms, collar, cuffs, and hem. Check for pilling, fading, or discolouration. If you can't see a particular area clearly, ask the seller for additional photos - any reputable seller will be happy to provide them.
Check the fabric content
Natural fibres - wool, silk, cotton, linen - age better and are generally more desirable than synthetics. They're also easier to care for and repair. If the listing doesn't mention fabric content, ask (but keep in mind there are often no fabric tags).
Understand return policies
Vintage items are often sold as final sale, so it's important to be confident before you buy. Ask all your questions upfront. A seller with good communication and detailed listings is usually a safer bet than one with minimal information and no photos.
Buy from curated sellers
There's a difference between someone clearing out their wardrobe and a dedicated vintage seller who has sourced, cleaned, and photographed their stock carefully. Curated sellers tend to have better quality control, more accurate descriptions, and a more consistent aesthetic - which makes it easier to build a wardrobe you'll actually wear.
Be patient
The best vintage finds rarely happen immediately! Save searches, check back regularly, and don't settle for something that's almost right. The perfect piece is out there - it just might take a little time to find it.
